Statement of Intent
I have chosen to produce a magazine for the fashion genre. I will also create a website to go alongside the magazine, to promote it and engage the increasingly digital audience. The magazine, New Dawn, is part of the Bauer media company and will target the 16-25 year old AB demographic.
I have chosen to show two representations, using two models, male and female. I will choose outfits and settings that fit the boho-chic style. I will use the conventions of the fashion industry, by using a main mastheads and plugs around the model.
The fashion style I have chosen to focus on is boho-chic, since I think I could make some interesting compositions and it is a style I enjoy.
I have decided to shoot my photos in woodlands, fields, and on beaches, since the boho style is linked around nature and the outdoors. This subverts the conventions of a typical fashion magazine, since most are shot in studios with bright colours and artificial light. I will use natural light as much as I can to fit the style, but I may need to use the reflective discs since it is coming nearer to winter and the weather is not ideal. I will use PhotoShop and InDesign to edit the photos, but I will only use these to adjust brightness and contrast, since it should feel as natural as possible. I will need to use a tripod to ensure the photos are not blurry, and so that I have more freedom to move the models if necessary.
Fashion magazines usually include a female celebrity on the cover, with one main splash and plugs in the negative space around the model. They always have a masthead and coverlines. The photos are usually mid shots or long shots, with the more indie magazines using close-ups.
After looking at the UK Tribes website, I decided my audience will be creatives. They are interested in fresh, new ideas and exploring boundaries. In fashion, they experiment with texture and colour, and often bring back older or vintage styles. I will look at the conventions of other magazines with young demographics, such as 'Indie' and 'Dazed and Confused', to help me do this. I will target them by making the layout of the magazine simple, and by making the content of the magazine interesting for a creative middle class audience.
The website will include conventions of the fashion industry, such as images of the models, as well as smaller articles and video interviews to involve the audience. I will also include extensions to the magazine's social media. The website will link to some of the articles in the magazine, with extras such as videos and unseen images. This will help attract a younger audience since they have a greater online presence than the older age groups.
I will record all my planning on my blog, using the checklist we have been given. This will help me stay organised and up-to-date. By the end of the project I hope to have made a unique and creative magazine and website.
